How To Know If Your Probiotic Is Working

Probiotics are consistently touted as a super supplement that helps everything from gas and bloating to weight management. But once you start taking a new supplement how do you know if it’s working? Here are a few things to look for to identify if your new probiotic is working correctly!

PRO TIP: Have a notebook specifically for notes on your symptoms! Our memory isn’t a good marker for measuring effectiveness. Be sure to write down how you feel in the morning and evening to track if your probiotic is working.

Regular Bowel Movements

Monitoring your bowel movements can be the first sign your probiotic is working. You should have daily bowel movements, and they should look like numbers three or four on the Bristol Stool Chart.

Less Bloating

Probiotics add to the good bacteria in your gut. This bacteria helps your digestive system work properly. If your probiotic is working, you should no longer feel regularly bloated.

It’s important to note that bloating is normal after high fiber meals but shouldn’t last hours!

Increased Energy

Your body gets its energy from the food you ingest. Probiotics help enhance nutrient absorption which aids in increasing your energy levels.

Clearer Skin

Bacteria in your gut can impact the health of your skin. Probiotics help add to the good bacteria which should decrease the presence of acne, rosacea, eczema, and inflammation on your skin.

Tips For Effectiveness

  • Take regularly: Probiotics work best when taken daily for one to two months. Consistency is key!
  • Find the right probiotic: Be sure you’re taking a high-quality probiotic with over 1 billion colony-forming units (CFUs) per strain.
  • Eat whole foods: Taking probiotics, but making no other lifestyle changes will not yield the best results. Eating a high-fiber diet and foods that improve digestion will help your probiotic function best.
